First Steps to Ministry Online

When we speak of ministry, we think of sharing God’s word and reaching out to others on a local or global scale. In the same way, when we think of the web, we also think of sharing information, and in an increasingly “social” web, we also connect with others in our own communities and all across the world.

Are churches using the web (effectively) to reach out to the lost and share the Gospel?
What options are there for ministries looking to get started on the web?

Creating a presence on the web can be a good way for your ministry to reach out to others and share the love and message of Jesus Christ. Many think it’s a costly venture, and in years gone by, I’d definitely agree it was difficult to have a presence on the web due to the cost to host and build a website or not having the resources. In recent times, however, it has never been easier. Basic website hosting isn’t that expensive. Content management systems such as Drupal and WordPress make it easy to setup and manage a website, and there are many free services that will take care of hosting your website for you so you don’t have to. Even if you don’t have a dedicated church/ministry website, you can create a Facebook page and still interact and share God’s word with others at no cost.

Some simple things that you can place on your website or page are your church beliefs, location and contact information, worship times, events, and possibly a few photos of the members of your ministry. As your ministry continues to grow on the web, other resources such as videos and audio of sermons can be made available. Sites such as YouTube and Vimeo make it easy to share your videos with others online. also just released the same Church Online platform they use for their online ministry, so that’s worth checking out, too.

An important aspect of any ministry is sharing God’s word. The Bible in various translations are made available online. Sites such as YouVersion, eBible and Bible Gateway make it easy to share God’s word quickly on your website.

The possibilities are endless. Take a step forward for Christ and begin reaching out to others and sharing God’s word online with people all across the world.

I just downloaded this to my Kindle last night. I’ve skmeimd the chapters and they look SOLID. Am looking forward to digging in this week. I found this book yesterday totally by accident (I think it was a God thing). I just finished a series about being the BODY of Christ and ended by calling my students to step up and take responsibility within our student ministry and to be ministers themselves. I may be a few weeks behind in digging in to this book, but it sure seems timely and I look forward to gleaning some ideas and principles and maybe avoid some pitfalls. Thanks for your ministry!
